For two decades, Motherloaded Tavern stood as one of Breckenridge’s most cherished gathering spots. Located at 103 South Main Street, the cozy dive bar and restaurant welcomed locals and visitors with hearty comfort food, creative cocktails, live music, and a warm, family-like vibe that felt like home.
Owner Chmurny “Chmurn” Cain, who opened the spot in 2006 with business partner Leslie Day after purchasing the former St. Bernard restaurant, built the place around community. The name itself carried a playful triple meaning: a nod to the mining “mother lode,” the walls filled with photos of mothers and grandmothers from Cain’s and Day’s families, and a lighthearted wink. Decor mixed vintage guitars, Johnny Cash and Elvis posters, and personal keepsakes that made every visit memorable.
Patrons packed in for generous plates of fried chicken, disco tots, mac and cheese, and unique twists on American classics, often paired with local beers or signature drinks. Live music, karaoke nights, and a dog-friendly patio added to the lively atmosphere that many compared to the fictional Cheers.
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, the tavern closed its doors for good after Cain sold the building. Rising operating costs, including property taxes that climbed from about $13,000 to roughly $50,000 annually, made continuing too difficult. “They’re acting like we’re closing ‘Cheers,’” Cain said of the emotional outpouring from regulars who shared memories of celebrations, friendships, and countless nights spent there.
Motherloaded leaves behind a legacy of hospitality and connection in the heart of Breckenridge. While the physical space is gone, the spirit Cain and her tight-knit staff cultivated will be remembered fondly by all who called it home.
