Idaho Springs: A day trip with spectacular views

If you’re staying at The Village at Breckenridge and looking for a fun family adventure, consider a day trip to Idaho Springs, one of Colorado’s most historic and charming mountain towns.

Located about 55 miles from Breckenridge, the drive typically takes just over an hour and follows the scenic I-70 corridor through the heart of the Rockies. It’s an easy excursion that combines Colorado history, outdoor adventure, and great food.

One of the most popular attractions is the historic Argo Mill and Tunnel, where visitors can learn about Colorado’s rich gold-mining heritage and even try their hand at gold panning. Recently, the area added an exciting new attraction: the Mighty Argo Cable Car. This scenic gondola ride carries visitors high above Idaho Springs to Miners Point, offering spectacular views of the Continental Divide, Virginia Canyon, and the surrounding Rocky Mountains. At the top, guests can enjoy viewing areas, hiking access, food and beverages, and some of the best photo opportunities in the region.

After exploring the Argo area, take a stroll through historic downtown Idaho Springs, browse local shops, and soak in the town’s authentic mountain character.

When it’s time for lunch, Beau Jo’s Pizza is a must-visit. Famous for its Colorado-style mountain pies, it’s a favorite among both visitors and locals. Families particularly enjoy the hearty pizzas and casual atmosphere.

Whether you’re interested in mining history, mountain scenery, or simply enjoying a unique Colorado town, Idaho Springs makes an excellent day trip from Breckenridge. With its mix of historic attractions, family-friendly activities, and the new Argo Cable Car experience, it’s easy to see why more visitors are adding Idaho Springs to their Colorado vacation itinerary.
