John Daniel Berning: Summit County’s Heartfelt Folk Voice

In the high country of Summit County, Colorado, there is a thriving music scene with a host of talented musicians. And few local musicians connect with audiences quite like John Daniel Berning (or JDB if you get to know him.) A former high school teacher from Indiana who relocated to Breckenridge in fall 2020, Berning taught himself guitar and songwriting during the quiet isolation of the pandemic. By summer 2021 he was playing open mics, and he quickly became a fixture in the local scene.

Berning’s music sits comfortably in the folk and singer-songwriter tradition—intimate, honest, and rooted in everyday emotion. Influences ranging from The Beatles and Tom Petty to the Avett Brothers, Gregory Alan Isakov, Tyler Childers, and The Lumineers shape his sound. He released his debut album Time to Mend in 2023, followed by the 2025 project BELONGING. His single “When I Die” has racked up more than 36,000 streams on Spotify, while tracks like “Last Home,” “Raising Hell,” and “Get Up Off the Grind” showcase both reflective storytelling and occasional fuller folk-rock energy. Most nights he performs solo, creating a close, living-room feel, though he also assembles talented trios or full bands for larger stages.

For the remainder of 2026, Berning continues his busy local circuit. Through August and September he is scheduled at familiar Breckenridge spots including the Gold Pan Saloon, Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub, Cool River Coffee House, Rocky Mountain Underground, and Breckenridge Distillery, plus appearances in Frisco. True to form, he typically plays multiple shows each week across Summit County and nearby mountain towns.

With nearly 100 performances a year, JDB remains one of the most consistent and approachable voices in the High Country music scene. Catch him live while you can, stream his catalogs on Spotify or Apple Music, and follow @jdbmusicco on Instagram or visit jdbmusicco.com for the latest dates and new releases.

You can see JDG live at Cool River Coffee on 8/15, or 8/22 and 8/28 at the Gold Pan. See his Instagram for more scheduled dates.
