Capturing the High Country: The Wilderness Photography of Gary Soles

For more than thirty years, landscape photographer Gary Soles has made Summit County his home, translating the raw, untouched beauty of the Colorado Rockies into monumental works of visual art. Operating his eponymous gallery right on Main Street in Breckenridge, Soles has become a defining fixture of the local mountain arts scene.

Unlike photographers who rely on roadside vistas, Soles is known for his dedication to the backcountry. He frequently straps on his skis or hikes deep into remote, high-altitude terrain, tracking shifting weather patterns to capture elusive moments of natural theater—from the fiery glow of an alpine sunrise to the serene stillness of hidden high-country lakes.

His artistic vision comes to life through large-format printing, often spanning several feet wide. By printing his high-resolution photography on modern metal and canvas substrates, Soles achieves an incredible sense of luminosity and depth, making the peaks and valleys appear to radiate from within.

Whether documenting the rugged wilderness of the Rocky Mountains or capturing intimate details of Western wildlife, Soles provides collectors with a genuine connection to the landscape. His work serves as a breathtaking reminder of the wild spaces just beyond the town limits, cementing his legacy as a true steward of Colorado’s visual history.
