As the first ski resort and mountain tourism destination in Colorado to earn certification as an International Dark Sky Community, Breckenridge has become a leader in protecting the natural beauty of the night sky while promoting sustainable tourism.
Located at more than 9,600 feet above sea level, Breckenridge offers exceptional stargazing conditions thanks to its high elevation and crystal-clear mountain air. The thin atmosphere provides outstanding visibility, allowing visitors to enjoy breathtaking views of constellations, planets, meteor showers, and even the Milky Way with remarkable clarity. On several occasions in recent years, residents and visitors have also witnessed spectacular displays of the Aurora Borealis from Summit County, creating unforgettable experiences beneath the mountain skies.
