The Science of Snow Melt

Winter in the mountains brings picturesque snowfalls, but clearing icy sidewalks and plazas is a constant battle. Enter radiant snowmelt systems—an engineering marvel hidden right beneath your feet.

For plazas featuring decorative pavers, a closed-loop glycol system offers an efficient, seamless way to keep high-traffic walkways clear and slip-free without manual shoveling or harsh chemical salts.

How the System Works Beneath the Surface

  • The Closed-Loop Network: At the heart of the system is a boiler or high-efficiency heat source paired with a circulating pump. Instead of plain water, the system uses a mixture of water and propylene glycol (antifreeze) to safely handle sub-zero temperatures without freezing inside the lines.
  • Under-Paver Piping: Flexible PEX tubing is laid out in a continuous, engineered grid pattern directly beneath the paver setting bed. When automated sensors detect freezing temperatures and moisture, the pump activates, pushing warmed glycol through the closed loop of pipes.
  • Thermal Conduction: As the warm fluid circulates, it transfers heat uniformly upward. The thermal mass of the sub-base and pavers absorbs and radiates this warmth, gently melting snow on contact and evaporating moisture before ice can form.

Why It Matters

Beyond pure convenience, these hidden systems protect your architectural investment. By eliminating corrosive rock salt and the mechanical gouging of metal shovels, paver surfaces last significantly longer, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and pristine guest experience all winter long.
